E-business and e-marketing are now the norm in doing business today. The Internet today is quickly becoming the marketplace of choice. Many companies are now using the Internet as an online sales and customer service and support tool for their products and services.

There are many definitions of what e-marketing is. A basic and working definition is: “e-marketing is the sum of all activities a company makes on the Internet to find, attract, win and retain customers.

Some basics of e-marketing

When creating your website, make sure there is a call to action as soon as your visitor lands on your home page. If you want to engage your visitor and have them return to your site then this is a must. Most people will not browse your site just for the sake of doing it. They came because they are looking for something. You want them to buy from your site and not from the competition so grab them as soon as they come. Think about when you are searching online. You search and when you click on one of those many links that pop up in the search engine you expect to find what you are looking for on the first page of that site. If you have to browse further it can be very frustrating. I know because it happens to me. Make sure your homepage or lading page encourages the user to do something so you have their attention as soon as they come to your site.

Love your customers

One good way of keeping your users happy and getting them to buy from you is to offer them free stuff. This can be something along the lines of the products or services your offer. It can also be something as easy as some free information that can help them trust you and the product or services available on your site. The thing is to get them to be comfortable buying from you and they will keep coming and coming again. I for one buy from the same places all the time as long as I know I get good service and good products there is absolutely no reason to switch.

Help your customers feel safe

If you are selling product then you know your customers want to feel safe as they are putting their trust in you when they pull out their credit card. Protect your customer’s transactions with secure order forms. Have a clear privacy policy and make sure you are a part of some sort of trusted organization like the Better Business Bureau. Your customer is most likely aware of the dangers of online transactions and will be cautious before handing over their hard earned money. Help them to know that you are there for them and you want to serve them and not just take their money.

Know your niche

If you want to stay in business you have to depend on more than just that first sale. You have to get return sales and long term clients. Learn your niche and market to those in your niche. When that customer think of a product you offer the first company in their minds should be yours. You got that first sale now keep that customer for life. Make sure your website content is clear as to your company’s intentions and focus. When a new visitor lands on your site within the first few second they should know what you sell without having to browse around. Know your business and your customers and you are on your way to a successful e-business and e-marketing journey.
